What is Love?

Back in May or June, my english teacher assigned us a project called “What is Love”. We were asked to SHOW what love is through a presentation for the class. I decided there couldn’t be a better possible way to show people what love is then to tell them the story of my grandparents.   My poppy Kenny O’Hanley,  and my nanny Cathy O’Hanley  were the absolute perfect example of what love is and what I believe it should look like.

Before I show you the video, there are a few things I’d like to tell you about.  The first thing is something that my nanny developed called dementia. This is a loss of brain function that affects language, thinking, memory, judgement, and behaviour.  It’s kind of like Alzheimer’s.  It affects one’s social skills, and their ability to think and speak to the point where daily life becomes quite difficult.  The dementia slowly started to strongly affect my nanny and she passed away this past spring.  But she left the incredible number of people that knew and admired her with the memory of an amazing, self-less woman who’s smile they’ll always remember.

As for my poppy…I hope you can all sort of get a sense of what an incredible man he is. He stayed by my nanny’s side through everything. But hey, I’m not going to tell you everything about them. I’ll let the video speak for itself…….

Let me know what you think.

Food Bank

7:00 am this morning I woke up to the lovely sound of my ear piercing alarm that I hadn’t heard in a verrrry long time.  An alarm at 7 am is quite the wake up call compared to forcing myself to get out of bed at 11:30 like I had been doing every morning for the past month.  I got to the N3xt studio bright and early for 8:00 and then headed to my second volunteer shoot of the season at the Food Bank.

I’ve always kind of wondered what it would be like to volunteer at the Food Bank but never really took the time to look into it.  When I got there I met Mike, (who was SO nice and friendly) and guided me through some things that a volunteer would typically do each day.  We started out by sorting some of the many bags and bins of food donations,  grouping like with like.  Once we had sorted a good amount of food,  we put the cans and packages away on the shelves.  Then we made up packages of food that they would give to a typical family.

I was surprised when Mike told me that they don’t only provide non- perishable food items but also give hamburger, bread, potatoes, and other things like that.  Thats so great!!! Today was a day that the volunteers just worked at putting food away on shelves and making up packages, but tomorrow will be when they give them out to people. I wished I could’ve had the chance to do that today.

But, I suureee am happy I got the chance to go there, because it made me realize I definitely wanna go back.  It seems like a very non stressful place to volunteer and people of every age can help out. It also makes you feel pretty good because you know you’re helping out your community.

Until next timeeee.

Bingo Buddies

Today I had the privilege of doing my first “On the Job” segment of this season at the Garden Home in Charlottetown.  For those of you who don’t know what the Garden Home is, it’s a long term care centre for seniors.  I’m pretty familiar with places like this because my nanny lived in one in Souris and my sister Lacey and I used to dance and sing for the seniors at different homes around town.

It was really a heart warming experience and I met some pretty great characters.  I started off the day meeting a charming lady named Blanche.  We sat in her room, talked, and got to know each other a little bit then went down to the activity room to play some BINGO!

We sat with two other ladies at a table in the activity room who were both very talkative and glad to have me join in with them. They were so very friendly and funny and were  easy to have a conversation with.  At the end  the bingo it seemed like I’d known them for a lot longer then just an hour. I also kinda forgot how awesome playing bingo is haha!

It’s kinda sad seeing people getting older and developing different diseases and problems that affect their ability to move around, talk, see, and all that.  And seeing the people in long term care facilities can be sad too. But when you get the chance to spend a little bit of time there, you see that it’s really a good place for them to be. The ladies I spent time with seemed very happy and were telling me they have daily exercises each morning, movie nights, arts and crafts, entertainment and tons of activities for everyone to take part in.

Volunteering at a place like that not only will help you learn about jobs you may be interested in such a nurse or resident care worker,  but better than that it just gives you a great feeling.  Leaving the Garden Home I felt happy and decided I would arrange a time to go back to perform and visit with them again.

Whether it’s spending more time with grandparents or volunteering at a seniors home I challenge everyone to spend a little more time with the seniors in your community.

A little bit about Celia

plane at 5am hi

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m  a quiet dreamer and I’m proud to call this beautiful Island my home. I have the best mom ever. I’m an aspiring performer and if you’re ever looking for me you’ll most definitely find me at the dance studio or on stage.  I spend the rest of my time in my back yard reading wise words from the Dalai Lama,  freeing my mind with Bob Dylan’s incredible lyrics, and chilling with my favourite person in the world Cole Whiteway.  I’m gonna offer y’all a bit of advice and you can take it or leave it…Be thankful for each day and enjoy the journey because it’s far more important than the destination.

I hope your not confused in thinking that I’m all serious and no fun because that’s not the case at all.  This is my first time ever  blogging  and I’m super excited to start updating my blog a few times a week with fun stories, topics, and random stuff so make sure you come back!

Sooo to end off my first post here’s a video I found the other day and couldn’t stop watching.  If  you know the musical or the movie Beauty and the Beast,  then I’d definitely suggest taking a look at this brilliant video.  It’s quite a different take on the well known classic…Here’s Beauty and the Beat:
